PAO (Period After Opening) Symbol – What It Means on Cosmetics Bottles

Posted on March 15, 2012

Have you ever wondered what that open lid jar graphic symbol stands for located on the back of your skin care bottles and jars? It looks like this:

That symbol is the Period-After-Opening (PAO) Symbol.

The PAO symbol indicated the number of months or years the product is safe to use after initial opening. In the above example, it depicts that the product is safe to use within 12 months of initial use. So please check all your cosmetics that have been sitting on or under your shelves for ages and discontinue using them if they have already surpassed the PAO recommendation time frame.
